Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells – Once Upon A Time (1964) #19 R&B, #19 Pop
Happy April fellow music lovers. This month in music history, on the afternoon of April 1, 1984 – one day before his 45th birthday — the uber talented Trouble Man Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by Marvin Gay Sr. in the aftermath of a heated argument. That is why the theme for this month’s postings here at OSML will be Marvin Gaye & His Women! It is my way of remembering just a small part of the legacy of Marvin Pentz Gaye, Jr.

Motown’s Berry Gordy decided to put together his superstar Mary Wells with his up and coming brother-in-law Marvin Gaye on this LP entitled “Together.”
A mixture of both standards and new songs “Together” peaked at #42 on the Pop Charts which was a good showing for an R&B album in 1964.
“Once Upon A Time,” composed by Barney Ales, Dave Hamilton, Clarence Paul and William “Mickey” Stevenson, was the first and only song to be released as a single from the 1964 LP. And “Together” was the first and last album of tunes to put together Marvin & Mary.
This song is a favorite of mine that I never hear on oldies radio and it is one of the many reasons for this blog. So many of the great oldies are completely ignored. I hope you enjoy this song as much as I always have. It is bright and breezy classic Motown!
