After the HOF Temptations — The Four Tops are my probably my second favorite male vocal group of all time. 1964′s “Baby I Need Your Loving” was their first hit with the Motown label after failed attempts with Chess, Columbia and the Gordy jazz subsidiary Workshop label. Good thing Gordy switched them back to R&B because this is the song that launched their career.

The song just missed the top 10 but who cares? It’s a classic as were all of the many Holland-Doizier-Holland songs that the group recorded and released.! Many have covered this particular song but no one, I mean NO ONE, does it like Mr. Levi Stubbs. Mr. Stubbs has one of the most unique voices in music and I have always loved it.

Of course many many more hits were to come and what is most impressive is that the group stayed together through it all. There was never any public display of ego and the original members always performed together until separated by illness and/or death. Originally dubbed The Four Aims, Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson and Lawrence Payton, The Four Tops were a class act!

I guarantee there will be much more to come from them here on this blog in the future. What a musical legacy they have. Their musical catalog continued on for decades.

Please keep the Oldies alive.
