[audio http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1525441_i58dq/TheKinks-YouReallyGotMe.mp3] You Really Got Me – The Kinks (1964)

This was the first hit after a few failures for The Kinks and it has ultimately become their signature song. The Kinks are one of my favorite British bands and I wish that the Oldies stations would play more of a variety of their large musical catalog.

According to the site Song Facts:

Ray Davies wrote this with the intention of making it big crowd-pleaser for their live shows. He was trying to write something similar to “Louie Louie,” which was a big hit for The Kingsmen.

Ray Davies: “I made a conscious effort to make my voice sound pure and I sang the words as clearly as the music would allow.”

The Kinks’ next single was “All Day And All Of The Night,” which was basically a re-write of this, but was also a hit.

This fun tune charted #1 in the U.K. and #7 in the U.S.

You Really Got Me – Composed by Ray Davies

Girl, you really got me goin’
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night

Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’, now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night

You really got me
You really got me
You really got me

See, don’t ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night

Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’, now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night

You really got me
You really got me
You really got me
Oh no…

See, don’t ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night

Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’, now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can’t sleep at night

You really got me
You really got me
You really got me

I appreciate your visit.

Sonny & Cher – Baby Don’t Go  (1964)

Songwriter Salvatore “Sonny” Bono had a fledgling career and was soon taken under the wing of producer Phil Spector who mentored Sonny. While working with Phil in the studio, Sonny met 16 year old singing wannabe Cherilyn “Cher” Lapierre. They soon began dating, married and formed a singing duo “Ceasar & Cleo”.

The duo did not do to well on their first two record labels, but became successful after being signed to Atlantic Records, where not only did they score their two biggest hits “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On.” , but each also had solo recording contracts/careers.

My personal favorite Sonny & Cher duet is “Baby Don’t Go” which was first released as a single in 1964 on Reprise Records. The song, composed by Sonny, went nowhere. But after “I Got You Babe” went to number one on Atlantic Records in the summer of 1965 the Reprise single peaked at 8 pop.

(Sorry if you missed out — but when I went to respond to a comment on this post I saw that the video was gone.  I wonder why these videos have no lasting stay on YouTube? – Sondan 10/16/09)

For as long as it lasts — here is a YouTube Video of Sonny & Cher lipsyncing (very poorly) to “Baby Don’t Go” while the well groomed teens of the Sixties dance. Check out the male teens in suits! LOL.

Keep enjoying the music and thanks for stopping by.
