“For the Good Times” Performed by Ray Price (1970), Al Green (1972) & Kris Kristoferson

January 16, 2014

Mr. Ray Price was one of many musical icons we lost in 2013. He will certainly be remembered for his  1970 #1 U.S. Country single “For The Good Times.” The Kris Kristofferson penned tune stayed on the Country chart for 19 weeks — yes that was nineteen weeks!

number1

This beautiful love-lost ballad also crossed over onto the Pop Charts at #11 and the Adult Contemporary Charts at #10. Last but not least,  “For the Good Times” was named Song of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.

Literally dozens and dozens of both Country and Pop artists covered the tune but, in my opinion, the best was Al Green’s R&B rendition. It appeared on Reverend Green’s 1972 5th studio LP titled “I’m Still in Love With You.” In 2003, the album was ranked number 285 in the “Rolling Stone” magazine 500 greatest albums of all time.

In closing it is only fair to allow you to see the composer perform his creation. (But the song seems tailor made for Reverend Al if you ask me – LOL)

“For The Good Times” Composed By Kris Kristofferson

Don’t look so sad, I know it’s over
But life goes on and this old world will keep on turning
Let’s just be glad, we had some time to spend together
There’s no need to watch the bridges that we’re burning

Lay your head, upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me, one more time, for the good times

I’ll get along, you’ll find another, and I’ll be here
If you should find, you ever need me
Don’t say a word about tomorrow, or forever
There’ll be time enough for sadness, when you leave me

Lay your head, upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me, one more time, for the good times
