#1 AC, #4 Pop
Captain & Tennille formed in 1973 Los Angeles, California and became the darlings of romantic pop in the Seventies! I know I am mos def not the only Boomer out there that enjoyed watching the duo’s (Mr. & Mrs. Daryl Dragon) TV variety show — now am I?
This cover of the Motown classic, from 1960, was a hit just like the original was almost two decades earlier in 1960.
Just goes to show you how enduring a great song can be!
#1 R&B, #2 Pop
Now sit back and enjoy the original version of “Shop Around” being performed by The Miracles. This song was the group’s FIRST EVER number one single: it was composed by the group lead singer William “Smokey” Robinson and his Motown Boss Berry Gordy, Jr.
TRIVIA: The B-Side of the Miracles “Shop Around” single was “Who’s Loving You.” This song too, would become a classic and a Number 1 R&B single in 1970, when it was interpreted by a young Michael Jackson fronting his family group — The Jackson5!
MORE TRIVIA: YouTuber Bankman58 has posted what is called “The Detroit Version of Shop Around” that was the local release before the national release of the original became the hit we know and love. I actually like the funkiness of this one.
What do you think? I”d love to hear from you.
