#6 R&B, #23 Pop

Composed and originally performed by Mack Rice in 1965, Wilson Pickett’s cover became the classic version of “Mustang Sally” and bested Rice’s version on the charts: Rice’s version peaked at #15 R&B while Pickett’s cover reached #6!

Rice  has composed many hit songs for other artists during his career, but “Mustang Sally”  was his only hit as a solo performing artist. Take a listen to his original.

Now which do you prefer? Please share you opinion by voting right here. And since there are so many other covers of this classic soul song,  you may write in any other  version that might be your fave.

When the Ford Mustang was introduced in 1965 it was a hot little number.  I can recall when  my Aunt bought a brand new one and I thought she was too kewl when she breezed into town in her ‘Stang on the weekends for a visit! My Dad would sing “Mustang Sally ” to her (his baby sis) with a wink and smile. All the while I dreamed of getting my own red convertible Mustang when I grew up :-)

Do you remember the Mustang of the Sixties?

Wasn’t it great to hear “Mustang Sally” again? What precious memories did it trigger for you?

Musically Yours,
