“Papa, Won’t You Dance With Me” Performed by Doris Day (1947)

June 13, 2011

So far this month we have had Daddy swearing,  singing bass and arriving home from who knows where. (LOL)

This week let’s call Daddy — Papa. Songs about Papa are plenty too.  OSML has already told you that James Brown’s Papa got a brand new bag. Doris Day also had a Papa that she asked to dance with her. :-)

“Papa, Won’t You Dance With Me?” is a song from the first act of the 1947 Broadway musical “High Button Shoes.”

With all music was by Jules Styne and lyrics by Sammy Cahn, “High Button Shoes” was adapted from an autobiographical novel, “The Sisters Liked Them Handsome” by Stephen Longstreet and George Abbott.

In 1947 Big Band Singer, Recording artist and Actress Doris Day released her recording of the song backed by the Lou Bring Orchestra: it was a top 20 hit.

The successful stage musical went to television in 1956.

This tune is a polka tempo so who best to perform it then one of the regulars on the Lawrence Welk Show. Check this out and bounce along. You can even sing along with the lyrics provided below,

Papa, Won’t You Dance With Me – Composed by Sammy Cahn & Jules Styne

Papa won’t you dance with me
Oh dance with me, please dance with me
Papa take a chance with me
And dance with me tonight

And when you whirl me
Round and round we’ll go
Right off the ground we’ll go
Around and round we’ll go
We’ll hear those trombones slidin’ high
We’ll both be glidin’ high
Up in the sky, I love the polka

Papa won’t you dance with me
Oh dance with me, please dance with me
When you hold me, hold me tight
Oh papa won’t you dance with me tonight

(Orchestral Interlude)

Papa won’t you dance with me
Oh dance with me, please dance with me
Papa take a chance with me
And dance with me tonight

And when you whirl me
Round and round we’ll go
Right off the ground we’ll go
Around and round we’ll go
We’ll hear those trombones slidin’ high
We’ll both be glidin’ high
Up in the sky, I love the polka

Papa won’t you dance with me
Oh dance with me, please dance with me
When you hold me, hold me tight
Oh papa won’t you dance with me
Papa won’t you dance with me
I said dance with me tonight.

Papa, Won’t You Dance with Me?
