“Never On Sunday” Performed by Melina Mercouri (1960) & The Chordettes (1961)

March 24, 2011

The Oscar for the 1960 Original  Song of the Year awarded at the 33rd Academy Awards went to composer Manos Hadjidakis for “Never on Sunday.”

This instrumental classic came from the score of the film with the same name. Actress/singer Melina Mercouri performed the song with words in this film in which she starred — as seen in the clip above.

Never on Sunday”  was the first foreign language film to win an Oscar in this category.  Here’s the original a trailer from the film if you are not familiar with it.

In 1961 the American female vocal group The Chordettes (of “Lollipop” fame)  had a hit version of the song with American lyrics. It charted #4 Adult Contemporary and #13 Pop.

Did you ever see Miss Piggy D. Muppet perform her cover of this classic? Check her out :-)  I just love that pig. Don’t you?
