“Three Coins in the Fountain” Performed by Frank Sinatra & The Four Aces (1954) and Dean Martin (1955)

March 6, 2011

In 1934 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced the Academy Award for the Best Original Song. This award went to the composer and not the performer.

Here at OSML it is all about the music,  so even though the 2011 entertainment “Award Season” is over,  let’s talk now about the “Oscars”  awarded between 1954 (the year of my birth and love of music)  and 1964 for “Best Original Song” during this month of March.

First up for discussion is “Three Coins in the Fountain” from the motion picture of the same name. I vividly recall watching this movie many times over on a wintry Sunday afternoon on what was then WTTG Metromedia Channel 5. It was one of those coming of age films in  that I looked at with longing as a tween and fantasized that my teenage years would hold such an adventurous trip.  How naive was I?  (ROTFL).

Nominated for three Academy Awards, the film “Three Coins in the Fountain” won two;  Milton R. Krasner won the 1954 Oscar for Best Cinematography, Color and
the award for 1954 Best Original Song in a Motion Picture went to Jules Styne for his music and Sammy Cahn for his lyrics to the soundtrack song “Three Coins in the Fountain.”

Frank Sinatra sang the song in the opening sequence of the film: he was uncredited. His rendition topped the UK music charts at #1 in September 1954.

Back stateside the cover by The Four Aces topped the Pops charts at #1 and but only made it to #5 in the UK.

Here is Dean Martin performing the nominated song at the Awards Ceremony in 1955. Of course I had a crush on both Frank and Dean back in the day.  I had plans to grow up and  marry either Frank, Dean or Rock Hudson.  ROTFL

Ah … great memories, great times and great music. The trifecta!

Musically Yours,
