“Moon River” Performed By Henry Mancini (1961) & Andy Williams (1961)

February 14, 2011

The 1961 Grammy Song of the Year Award went to songwriters Henry Mancini and  Johnny Mercer for “Moon River,” from the soundtrack of the Oscar Winning movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

The song in the movie was sung by Audrey Hepburn,  but the 1961 Grammy for Record of the Year went to Henry Mancini’s recorded version of “Moon River” from his #1 Soundtrack LP of “Breakfast At Tiffany’s.”

Moon River” also won a third Grammy,  the  1961  Best Arrangement Accompanying A Vocalist or Instrumentalist. Whew … that was a mouthful, but there is even more.

“Moon River”  won the Oscar at the 64th Academy Awards for Best Original Song of 1961.

Andy Williams was asked to perform the song at the Oscar Award show and it soon became Williams’ theme song.  Here’s Andy singing his new theme song live in 1961. Andy never released the song as a single but if he had I am sure that it would have topped the charts!

I have always loved Andy singing this song. It also takes me back to the Sixties of my carefree youth. Remember the “Andy Williams Show” and the Osmond Brothers?  Well I surely do.  Ah, some of the best years of my life.  Good times. Good times.

Musically Yours,
