Formed in 1971 Philadelphia, Pensylvania, Sister Sledge (initially as Sisters Sledge when the girls were aged 12-16)  were four of the daughters of  the former Florenz Kathy Williams.  Mrs. Sledge was the eldest daughter of an opera singer.

Education was paramount to Mother Sledge and she made sure that each daughter completed high school and graduated from Temple University.

The sisters, Debbie, Kim, Joni, and Kathy Sledge, released their first LP, Circle of Love,  in 1974 and were regionally known, but it wasn’t until they hooked up with the dicso group “Chic” leaders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards for “We Are Family” that they became internationally known.

I liked “Family” but “Greatest Dancer” (originally intended for Chic) was one of my faves composed and produced by the Rodgers/Edwards duo. Apparently it was also one of Will Smith’s faves too since the “Fresh Prince” sampled this and other Sister Sledge songs in his music.  Remember this one? I even detected a rip-off of MJJ’s “mama se mama sa mama mama cousa” in it. Do  you hear it? :-)

Musically Yours,

When I prepared this post I realized that all the Fresh Prince songs I like are because he has sampled some of the best classics from the Seventies & Eighties.

So is the dance that Will did in the video called the “Jiggy” SupaS? Duh, I never realized that.

P.S. Hope you are doing ok young lady. I have missed your smiling face around here.
