Before there was a Jackson5 musical group formed in Gary, Indiana by their father Joe, there was also a Burke5 sibling musical group formed in Chicago, Illinois.

Dubbed "The First Family of Soul," the Five Stairsteps were discovered and produced by Curtis Mayfield.

The group, formed in 1958,  originally consisted of five brothers: Clarence Burke, Jr., James Burke, Kenneth Burke, Dennis Burke and their sister Alohe Jean, the eldest children of Windy City police detective Clarence Burke Sr. and his wife Betty.

The 1966 hit single "World of Fantasy" appeared on the group's self-titled debut LP on Windy City Records. At the time of the LP release in 1967 the group members ranged in age 13 to 17. Amazing vocals for such youth … don't you agree?

The group disbanded in 1976 but this was not the end of the family's involvement in music. There will be more to come from the talented Burke family in the future here at OSML so stay tuned and/or subscribe to the feed so you don't miss anything.

Please enjoy this vintage video of the group singing this classic R&B tune and see why "Mama Stairstep" named her children The Stairsteps, due to their height when lined up in chronological age order. :-)

Musically Yours,
