Halloween may not be a favorite holiday of mine,  but this final novelty song presentation for the month is most suitable for the upcoming holiday. The YouTube visuals are part of the effect so please sit back, relax and enjoy  one of my favorite novelty tunes of all time — “I Put A Spell On You” performed by the first Shock Rocker of Rock and Roll — Screamin’ Jay Hawkins!

Even though this was Hawkins’ biggest hit it never charted.  He recorded and released a few more novelty tunes after “Spell”  but this was and still his biggest and best remembered.

Hawkins, who initially planned to be an opera singer,  was inebriated when he recorded “Spell.”

This song has been covered often, but my favorite cover is by the late great Nina Simone. Her soulful ballad version is probably closer to the blues ballad version Hawkins originally had in mind for his record.

Here is Nina,  live in London performing “Spell” 1968.  Enjoy.

Musically Yours,
