#3 R&B; #1 Billboard Hot 100

Stay” is one of my doo-wop all-time favorites. Short, sweet and to the point  — this tune is the shortest in length to ever reach #1 on the charts.

Maurice Williams and his Royal Charms, became The Gladiolas and finally Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs in 1959.  The  group members now; Henry Gaston, Albert Hill, Little Willie Morrow, Charlie Thomas and Wiley  Bennett, recorded “Stay” in 1959.

The song was composed by Williams in 1953 (he was age 15) at the end of a date he didn’t want to end. ;-)

Here are the lyrics to the often covered classic.

Stay – Composed by Maurice Williams

(Stay)
A-a-a-a-ah, just a little bit longer
(Please)
Please, please, please, please
Tell me you’re going to

Now, how your daddy don’t mind
And your mommy don’t mind
If we have another dance
Yeah, just one more
One more time

Oh, won’t you stay
Just a little bit longer
Please let me hear
You say that you will
Say you will

Won’t you place your sweet lips
To mine
Won’t you say you love me
All of the time

(Stay)
Just a little bit longer
(Please)
Please, please, please, please
Tell me you’re going to

Come on, come on, come on and … yey-yey-yeh
Come on, come on, come on and stay-yey-yey-yeh
Come on, come on, come on and stay, woops!
Come on, come on, come on…

Mr. Williams is still in the music business. Please check out the latest at The Official Website of Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs.

Short and sweet. When I listen to it I usually end up playing it about 3 times to get my fill ;-)

Son Dan,
I started a blog because I couldn’t find yours. Now that I have, this is so refreshing! Thanks for this reminder of the music of my youth!

Hi Lyn – glad I could be of some use to you in my absense (LOL). Seriously congratulations on your blog. I will absolutely check it out.
I am so sorry you lost me but glad you found me. Rest assured that I am not going any place: I am in this for the long haul. Blogging about this great music soothes my stress away; keeps me going through rough times; and conjures up awesome memories of my youth that make me smile. I have had some technical problems but will always work through them.

Musically Yours,

SonDan
