Patrice Holloway -- Those DJ Shows (1965)
Patrice is the younger sister of Brenda Holloway. Like her big sister she was a child prodigy proficient on guitar, drums, cello, and violin. And like her big sister she composed music alone and as a collaborator with Brenda.
Patrice was invited to join Motown after her sister’s first hit. But she had only one single release on the VIP label and the rest of her output was shelved in the infamous “vault.”
Whenever Motown throws us crumbs from the “vault” I always run to purchase the collections quickly before they go OOP (out of print). This is one of those songs from one of my treasured CD collections, by Patrice, that certainly was chart worthy IMHO. You can tell it is a classic Smokey composition after the first few notes.
Patrice recorded this vocal January 1965: the song had previously been recorded by The Supremes. Neither version was released in that era. What do you think about it? I’d like to hear your opinion.
Patrice’s contract was terminated in 1965 but she went on to have a rich and varied musical career just as she did before Motown. She has been a solo act, a studio session singer, a composer, and even voiced the character “Valerie” when the comic book “Josie & The Pussycats” was brought to TV as a cartoon series.
Musically yours,

Listen to Patrice Holloway, as the character Valerie, singing the theme song to the 1968-68 animated TV show “Josie and the Pussycats.” According to WIKI:
The show’s theme song, titled “Josie and the Pussycats”, was written by Hoyt Curtin, William Hanna (under the pseudonym “Denby Williams”), and Joseph Barbera (under the pseudonym “Joseph Roland”).
This is for you SupaStarry! Enjoy.

you were right lol. you really got me on this one, i neva knew about her at all! and i remember Josie and the Pussycats! lol i used to love that show.
You mean I wasn’t the only little girl watching Josie and The Pussycats on saturday mornings?. I always thought their songs were soulful and once I found out who was doing the singing I knew why (LOL)
But all jokes aside, I know I sound like a broken record but I gotta say it again — Motown had so many talented artists pass through their doors with such great potential and let them slip by the wayside. This angers me, so instead of concentrating on the same old Supremes, Diana Ross and my beloved Temptations, I feel it is important to honor these “coulda beens” and “shoulda beens” as my way of celebrating Motown’s 50th anniversary. At least if you are the only one reading my, blog then now you, Miss SupaStarry, will know the name Patrice Holloway! That’s one more knowing about her than did before I made the post. I consider that my contribution to Motown 50!
Talk to you soon SupaS.
nah, i used to love that show! and i loved the theme song too! (which is stuck in my head right now lol). no you dont sound like a broken record. not alot of people know about all the “unsung” artist at Motown and your helping us learn about them.
i think your making a GREAT contribution to Motown 50! Go SonDan!! lol

If I am gonna have it stuck in my head tonight so are you SupaS! (LOL). Enjoy and thank you so very, very much for the encouragement and appreciation you are giving me. I just wish Motown were doing more since Five- Oh is a big birthday! I was looking forward to getting some “schooling” from them this year, but instead I ended up doing the schooling (SMILE) But it is fun and therapeutic so I am not complaining!
Hugs!
SonDan
LOL Thanks SonDan! that brings back sooooooo many memories!
