Mary Wells – Two Lovers (1963) #1 R&B; #7 Pop

Smokey Robinson wrote most of Mary Wells’ big hits and this is my favorite of them all. Believe it or not I actually remember the very first time I heard this song!

I was attending a children’s talent show in the basement of my church. Based on the year this song came out I was probably in the fourth grade or so. I recall a little skit was performed and I was really into it, thinking that the girl singing the song was cheating on her two boyfriends, and how wrong it was of her.

I also remember that the two males in the skit were the older brothers of one of my elementary school classmates. The surprise ending lyric, explaining that both personalities were in one and the same person, was a revelation! Wow was I naive and glad that the songstress wasn’t a two timer :-) Ah, the mind of a child.

Obviously that was the first time I had ever heard the song, but I made it my mission to find out who sang it and to own the 45rpm. As I write this post, I am wondering how I did it at that age (probably about nine) and with no internet at my disposal.

The song remains a favorite and the special memories of it wil remain in my heart and mind as well. This is why I love this music so very much. It always can take me back to the time and place that I first heard it.

The Oral Cancer Foundation has a concise biographic write up of Miss Well at their site here. As you may, or may not know, Wells, once Motown’s biggest star, died from cancer of the larynx.

If you smoke consider stopping now. If you don’t smoke — don’t start.
