Of course I knew Kenny Loggins from his solo career pop music but only as seen on shows such as “Solid Gold” back in the day! This song, which never charted,  was not familiar to me as a holiday tune nor was I aware of the now OOP LP of the same name.

But after hearing Loggins’ original version, on my local soft rock FM station the day after hearing it on one of the Sirius Radio holiday stations,  I knew that the cosmos was trying to tell me something since there is no such thing as coincidence.

Upon hearing it both times  I did recognize the song, with different lyrics, as being used on the “American Idol” TV show when a contestant was no longer in the running and was sent home.  AI 2003 winner Reuben Studdard sings the AI version but I had  assumed the song was  his. (BTW his version is pure gospel/ soul – he took it to church and I love his cover tremendously!)

But now I have discovered the original and have just ordered the soft rock/jazz album of the same name as the song and am looking forward to receiving it. The set was produced by Loggins along with Phil Ramon and Bob James : since all three are favorite talents of mine I am betting the set is a good one. The album charted #27 Pop in 1977 but it never crossed my radar:  I suppose at the time I was too busy dancing at the disco to the up tempo stuff.  :-)

Anyway, the CD is on it’s way to me as I prepare this post.

This is a great song IMHO. Composed by Loggins and Bob James it is now one of my new, old holiday classics! The keyboard work is stunning. Hope you enjoy it as well.  Here are the lyrics to this original version so you can sing along.

Celebrate Me Home – Composed by Kenny Loggins & Bob James

Home for the holidays,
I believe I’ve missed each and every face,
Come on and play my music,
Let’s turn on the love light in the place

It’s time I found myself,
Totally surrounded in your circles
Whoa, my friends

Please, celebrate me home,
Give me a number,
please, celebrate me home
Play me one more song,
That I’ll always remember,
and I can recall,
whenever I find myself too all alone,
I can sing me home.

Uneasy highway,
Traveling where the Westerly winds can fly,
Somebody tried to tell me,
But the men forgot to tell me why,

I gotta count on being gone,
Come on woman, come on daddy,
Be what you want from me,
I’m this strong, I’ll be weak

Please, celebrate me home,
Give me a number,
please, celebrate me home
Play me one more song,
That I’ll always remember,
I can recall,
whenever I find myself too all alone,
I can make believe I’ve never gone,
I never know where I belong,
Sing me home.

Please, celebrate me home,
Give me a number,
please, celebrate me home
Play me one more song,

Celebrate, celebrate
Celebrate, celebrate
Celebrate, celebrate
Celebrate me home

Please, celebrate me home,
Please, celebrate me home,
Well I’m finally here,
But I’m bound to roam,
Come on celebrate me home
Well I’m finally here,
But I’m bound to roam,
Come on celebrate me home
Well I’m finally here,
But I’m bound to roam,
Come on celebrate me home
Please, celebrate me home,
Please, celebrate me home,
Please, celebrate me home,
Please, celebrate me home,
Please, celebrate me home,
Please, celebrate me home,

Musically Yours,
