Legendary group had been fighting for sole use of their name

The Drifters have today (July 3) reached an out-of-court settlement with another group performing under the same name.

The group has featured over 60 different members since it was formed 55 years ago by manager George Treadwell.

To date, The Drifters have sold 114 million albums and 214 million singles, including hits like, ‘Saturday Night At The Movies’ and ‘Up On The Roof’.

In recent years fans have been confused by a glut of other groups, some featuring ex-members, performing under the same name.

Good for them. I remember seeing one of the original members bust up a concert of fakers on the news.

Wow – I missed that little news item Bob. So this has obviously been a long battle for them and I am glad they won.

I often see pictures advertised of “Oldies” Concerts and can look at the photos to know that those are NOT the original group members. I hope eventually all of these unscrupulous promoters and groups are stopped by long-overdue legislation.

And I thank PBS and T.J. Lubinsky for presenting those great concerts featuring the ORIGINAL artists for generation X to see what a great musical legacy we have from the Fifties and Sixties.
