James and Bobby Purify were Floridian cousins James Purify and Robert Lee Dickey. They recorded this cover of “Shake A Tail Feather”", composed by Otha Hayes/Verlie Rice/Andre Williams, which previously had charted for the Five Du-Tones in 1963 and has been covered by many other artists since — including The Ikettes, Ike & Tina Turner, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Cheetah Girls, Ray Charles, The Blues Brothers, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels and the list goes on and on. And then and I know you remember it being used in the original “Hairspray” movie. Those dancing scenes were so kewl in that movie. (LOL).
The Purify’s cover version bested the original by going to #25 on the pop charts and #15 on the R&B charts.
So dance and sing-along to this feel good song:
Shake A Tail Feather Composed by Otha Hayes/Verlie Rice/Andre Williams

[chorus]
Twist it! shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it baby!
Here we go loop di loo!

Bend over, let me see you shake your tail feather
Bend over, let me see you shake your tail feather
