Written by William “Mickey” Stevenson and Ivory Jo Hunter, “Ask The Lonely”, was released Jan 15, 1965. This hauntingly beautiful ballad, led by the one of a kind – distinctive voice of Levi Stubbs, went to #9 on the R&B Chart and #24 US Pop. This was just the second of many more smash hits for the quartet.
No one can out do Levi on this song, or any song that he sings for that matter, but a very young Jackson Five came very close when they made this version of ATL, along with other covers of Motown hits during their summer 1969 recording sessions for their first album. The songs, produced by Bobby Taylor, that did not make the album remained in the Motown vault for several years. I first heard this song on the little publicized 1986 album “Motown Superstars Sing Motown Superstars”. This song, and other previously unreleased songs, also appeared on “Soulsation!” 4-CD box set of music performed by the legendary Jackson 5 throughout their historic tenure in Motown spanning from 1969 to 1975.
I really want to hear from you which version you like the best so won’t you please vote now!?
Thanks for reading and listening.
